It's 2:30 a.m. and I'm still on fire from First Wednesday tonight at GCC. John 3:16 baby! This was my first time speaking at First Wednesday and there aren't words yet to describe my experience but it was good.

A few people asked me for the lyrics to the Phil Wickham song I was referencing. It's always helpful for me to read it over a few times and just let it sink in.

Phil Wickham - True Love'

Come close listen to the story
About a love more faithful than the morning
The Father gave His only Son just to save us

The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Fathers Broken Heart
Tears were filling Heaven's Eyes
The day that True Love died, the day that True Love died
When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn't move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that True Love died, The day that True Love died

Search your heart you know you can't deny it
Come on, lose your life just so you can find it
The Father gave His only Son just to save us

The Earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt The Fathers broken heart
Tears were filling Heaven's Eyes
The day that True Love died, the day that True Love died

When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn't move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that True Love died, The day that True Love died

Now, Jesus is alive

Jesus is alive
Jesus is alive
Jesus is alive
Jesus is alive
Oh, He is alive
He rose again

When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn't move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that True Love died, The day that True Love died

Come close listen to the story

John, (like I know him, ha) says, he writes music "COMPARED TO NOTHING".

This might be the very reason why John Mayer is "John Mayer" and why there are 30 THOUSAND good singers out there who will NEVER be known for their art....it's just like everyone else because they can't see originality through their constant-comparing lens.

I missed it but Brooke pointed out how profound this statement was in that we're more creative when we don't constantly compare and that there are times when we won't create anything new/different if we're constantly comparing it to other things.

Here's a few things I thought about:

1. Comparison paralyzes

2. If you're losing, Comparison defeats

3. If you're winning, Comparison produces pride

4. Comparison divides

What if we live compared to nothing.

John Mayer is one of my favorite artists because of his creativity. I don't know much about his life or the way he lives but I love his art! I'm watching his episode on Storytellers and he dropped some wisdom just now.

He's expressing frustration because he was in love with someone but it didn't go well because she wouldn't allow him to love her. He said, "It's hard when you can't love someone because someone else didn't first." John's saying that one of the hardest things to do is love someone who won't let you love them because the first person who was supposed to love them never did. That's deep.

Brooke just said, "that reminds me of when Papa B. says hurt people, hurt people." She's so right!

The hook in this song says, "Fathers be good to your daughters, daughters will love like YOU do!" ...that's STRONG!

...he's saying that first person to love you is supposed to be your "father"...obvious I know "the father" is actually "THE FATHER" (all caps). We can love ONLY BECAUSE "He [Christ] first loved us"! 1 JOHN 4:19 ENOUGH SAID!

Nonetheless I LOVE this song. Here's the lyrics to the song he's referring to:

"Daughters"

I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls are continually changed
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hands
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it's got nothing to do with me

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left
Cleaning up the mess he made

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Boys, you can break
You'll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without the warmth from
A womans good, good heart

On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the guide and the weight of her world

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

I'm destined to catch Jeff on every instrument he can play. I think next up, we're going to hi-jack a 6th grade band classroom and let Jeff get after it. None of that is scheduled, I just think it would be fun.

But until then, I'll show you a video i took while Jeff was just dabbling on the drums at camp.

(If it isn't obvious yet, I love bragging on my GSM team because they are awesome!)

This post was right on the money. This topic has been on my mind for a LOOOONG time and Tony did a great job of throwing some obvious truth into the mix of things to think about.

Here's a glimpse:

"While the church still leans on a mix of rock and pop music as the preferred worship genre, our culture has shifted once again. Now, according to iTunes, 1 in 3 of the top 100 songs in the country is either hip-hop/rap or R&B/soul. My guess, though, is that you can’t name a church in the country that’s using these genres of music for worship. Why is that?

Now, before you let your “it’s-not-our-culture” bias set in, consider this. Most of the hip-hop and R&B music has been recorded by black artists. 14% of the U.S. population is black. But, remember, nearly one-third of the music purchased on iTunes is one of these two genres. You do the math. White people like hip-hop."

Later in the post he wrote...

The people making decisions about music choices in services don’t prefer this style of music. And, don’t we all know, preferences drive decisions in churches.

Churches are not hiring worship leaders (or raising up volunteers) who can authentically lead worship with these genres of music.

Christian artists aren’t recording music that reflects what our culture is listening to.

Churches don’t know the culture they’re trying to reach. If a third of the country is buying hip-hop or R&B music, you’d think at least one church would be trying to use that style of music to reach those people for Jesus.
