30 Day Bible Challenge Day 14 PLUS variations

I can't believe I'm over halfway through this 30 Day Bible Challenge.  I'm on the 'finish in 20 days' track so I've got just about 6 days left to finish up! Lots of people are with us in this journey, I haven't tallied the numbers for how many people we have right now but it's been great to see and hear how this is going for everyone!  Thanks for the emails through my contact page here on the blog & for other emails, facebook messages, and twitter DM's about how this is progressing for you guys. Fun variation people have added to the challenge:
  1. About 12 different people decided to do this in the context of their small group, which I thought was a pretty sweet way for some accountability!
  2. 1 person said, "I know myself and I won't do it in 30 days so I'm gonna take the plan and make it 60 days" (Love the honest approach and that she was setting herself up for a win!!
  3. 1 person mentioned, "This is pretty easy for me because I read all the time anyway, for this challenge I just had to change the content that I was reading.  So to make it a true challenge for me I decided to try to pull one thing out of every 3 days that I have to actually DO next month.  So I'm daily making a list of things that I will try to do next month at some point."
  4. 1 of my old football buddies said, "man I had to give myself a penalty if I don't get all the reading done.  If I don't do all the reading I'm supposed to do I have to do 20 pushups for every verse I don't read, and you KNOW I'm not trying to do no pushups". (haaaaahahahaha this boy cracks me up!)
I hope everyone who's on this journey with us is being stretched like I am and finding significance in the process.  Sometimes it's easy to blow through the process to get to the goal but I want to encourage you guys to not get stuck in goal-seeking just for the sake of saying you finished in 30 days or less...but rather focus on what God wants to show you in the process as you read.  For me:
  • It's been a struggle to keep up with all the reading as I've been on the road and pretty much preoccupied 80% of the time.  But I figured out that if I just decide every morning that I WILL read what I'm supposed to, it will always get done.  So I've just made sure I took time every day to stay on track.  I hope you're doing the same.
  • There is light at the end of the tunnel and it's fun to see how much I've been able to learn through doing this.
  • I read REALLY slow when there is a lot of information I need to process.  I feel like I've constantly been running my readings through my worldview and seeing if they line up.  I like to check myself to make sure I'm living with a true Biblical Worldview.
  • Acts and Romans don't read like the Gospels.  It takes a lot of brain power for me to read about the Church in Acts and Romans and compare that to what we call Church today.  (Makes me excited about what's next for Granger Community Church.  Big things right around the corner!!)

My friend MESSED ME UP!

One of my best friends Jason Stoker from Pinelake Church down in Mississippi commented on my blog post about "if we should fight pop culture" yesterday day and said he was wrestling with this verse and what it meant for his life and when I read it...IT MESSED ME UP!! (in a good way of course)  (Stoker is the one in the bottom right of the pic in the red.)

Read these words and see what they do to you:

Colossians 4:2-6 "2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

Here's my extraction of that passage:

  1. Devote yourself to prayer. Devote means "to give entirely to"
  2. Pray...THAT GOD MAY...open a door...for our message...so that we may PROCLAIM the mystery of Christ...for which I am in chains.
  3. Pray that I may proclaim it CLEARLY! ...AS I SHOULD.
  4. Be wise...IN THE WAY YOU ACT...toward outsiders
  5. Make the most of EVERY opportunity.
  6. Let your conversation be FULL OF GRACE...seasoned with salt...SO THAT you may know how to answer everyone.
THAT....IS....INTENSE!!! Thanks for the reminder bro!

30 Day Bible Challenge progress

So far the response has been AMAZING...in jus two days there are 53 people signed up with Brooke and I to do this 30 Day Bible Challenge (reading the New Testament in 30 days or less). What I've noticed so far:
  • The book of Matthew reads much like a novel.
  • Jesus often takes time to be alone...I need to manage that better in my own life.  I'm so relational that I'd be with people 24/7 if I could.
  • Jesus GOT MINISTRY DONE!  ...AND TAUGHT THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH IT.
Things I'm learning/remembering:
  • I can do this.  Sometimes it's not until you start doing something that you really believe it's possible.
  • I could do a better job of teaching those around me what I'm learning/doing/processing WHILE I'm learning it and doing it.  I usually like to wait until I know it's a good practice/process before I recommend it but I have some close brothers who'd walk with me if I just let them.
  • None of the chapters and verses were there when the text was originally written.  I forget that sometimes.  It's so easy to take a verse COMPLETELY out of context because of the little numbers.
  • Totally forgot that John the Baptist was beheaded. (Matt 14)
  • Jesus clearly states sacrifice is required to follow him. (Matt 10:37-39)
What others are saying:
  • "Wow in the 1st couple of pages of this challenge Gods word spoke to me for how I felt after baptism a month ago...Matt 3:16 The moment Jesus came out of the baptismal waters, the skies opened up & he saw Gods Spirit(the Message)...talk about amazed!!" - Angela
  • "Thanks for the challenge btw.  I'm sure it is what i need right now.  Looking forward to what GOD is going to reveal in this!!!!!" - Jason

Want Results? Get Serious. "VIM" by Dallas Willard

Want better results for anything (Personal life, Family, Ministry, etc)?  There's usually no quick fix...it takes real work!  Similar to dropping lbs...get a plan, work the plan, eat right, & you'll see some progress.  To see results in your spiritual growth...get a plan, put it into action, make the time count & you'll start to see some progress.  It's that simple DC?  YEP!  ...but it won't happen if you don't "work" the plan.

Dallas Willard reminds us that it takes Vision, Intentionality, & Means (Methods)

Vision Things we need to understand clearly
Intention Values we need to commit to
Means (Methods) What we can do to foster transformation

One of the biggest challenges of spiritual development is balancing our part and God's part. If we assume too much of the job, we end up with a works-oriented form of sanctification that leads to self-righteousness, burn-out, or legalism. If we assume too little, we fail to engage sufficiently to have a genuine relationship with God and/or bring about change. Virtually any imbalance in this area severly impacts our spiritual growth. As it turns out, most of us lean fairly heavily toward one end of the spectrum or the other, often unaware of how we are affecting our own lives, or what is needed in order to perform a course-correction. And the more dedicated we are to an out-of-step paradigm, the worse it is for us. Proper balance and participation with God in this matter of growth is precisely what the VIM model spells out so well. In order to engage effectively in this process, there are certian things that we need to re-envision and understand well, there are some values that we need to commit to, and there are certain means available to us by which we can deliberately open ourselves up to the kind of relationship with God that is transforming. Vision Even among Christians who are good students of the Bible and heavily committed to their Lord, we find that after just a few years of dedicated devotion to their walk with God, they often seem to run out of steam and their growth slows down to a crawl. What we now know is that there are actually quite a few reasons why these traditional approaches to Christian discipleship have often had good initial results but are unable to assist us in our development beyond a certain point. And if we will stop long enough to revisit some of our assumptions about what we have thought was the right way to proceed, we can find our way again and move on. I have listed a few of the more signifcant items here for further reading.
  • Restoring the continuity between Salvation and the Christian Life (article)
  • Understanding the true nature of Grace as a means to live by (article)
  • Developing an authentic relationship with God, not an abstraction based on knowledge alone (article)
  • Learning how to engage with God for both healing from the past and initiating new growth (article)
Intention Many Christians hope that given enough time, just showing up in church week after week and engaging in various Bible studies will eventually change them into the persons they are supposed to be. Some even put in considerable effort, learning how to teach others, and taking part in various ministries of the church. But as good as these things are, there is only so much impact that they can have on our souls. Getting beyond the reach of our will, to transforming our hearts and minds and becoming different people from the inside out requires direct participation with the Holy Spirit. And in order for us to engage with God sufficiently for change to occur, we have to make sufficient space in our lives for that relationship. Wanting to be different is not enough. We need to actually make the space necessary to engage with God, and then spend time speaking and listening to the Holy Spirit. That's the point of the practices we now refer to as spiritual disciplines. Please note that these disciplines may or may not be related to whatever you may have called a "Quiet Time" or Devotions in the past. If your Quiet Time felt more like eating dust than drinking living water, or more like studying for a test than being cared for by a mentor, you can be sure that something important was missing. And that important something was the Holy Spirit. The point is that we need to develop a working relationship with God that goes beyond study and "obedience." We need arrange our lives to make space for a real connection that feeds our soul and changes our minds and hearts. Means (Methods) Making a space for God can be done many ways. Over the centuries certain practices have emerged that have proven to be more effective than others in opening up a space for engaging with God. But before we talk about what those look like, there is one very important truth that we must nail down in order to prevent our practices from falling into legalism or lifeless behaviors. And that truth is this .....
Spiritual Disciplines do NOT change us !
This is so important! What we need to understand is that spiritual disciplines have no merit or power in and of themselves. We are not better than other Christians because we practice them. We do not become better by practicing them. What they do for us is make a space for us to engage with God. That's all. What happens when we engage with God is an entirely different matter. And having that distinction firmly planted in our minds is crucial. Setting aside time every morning for prayer and meditation is an important thing to do. But the act of sitting down with our Bible, and even the act of reading our Bible is not what develops our character. Our understanding might be improved, and our appreciation for the things of God might be stirred. But when we open up to the Holy Spirit directly and personally, and receive his words into our hearts and minds, we encounter Life itself that is able to change who we are. Our part is to make a space for listening to God. His part is giving us the words of truth and life that penetrate deep into our soul. This is why learning to discern the voice of God is so foundational to life in the kingdom and why developing a conversational prayer life makes the difference between practicing dead rituals and experiencing the power of God to change lives.
Spiritual disciplines do not change us, they only make a space for engaging with God.
Now we can begin to see how spiritual disciplines are good, and why we need to rearrange our lives to make time for them. If you have not yet read the sections on Listening Prayer, please do so now.

6 tips for fighting poor spiritual growth

Tired of lack-luster spiritual growth?  Here are some tips that might help.
  • DISCIPLINE: Are you sick of poor spiritual growth?  Then know that you're the only one who can change it.  Develop of plan/method and follow through with it.  Budget time for it and get it done!
  • BE FLEXIBLE: Rigid plans/methods are ESSENTIAL, but don't lock yourself into lofty goals, like reading the entire Bible in a month.  Instead, aim for realistic goals like reading AND DIGESTING one book in the Bible in a month.  Finishing earlier is just icing on the cake!
  • BE FREE: You have the freedom to develop a "custom" plan for your growth. Be free to do what will work for you...this implies you know yourself.  You don't have to take what someone else did and replicate it. (Although sometimes that's a good place to start if you're in the same place spiritually)
  • OVERLOAD: Read everything you can!!!  Sometimes information overload can rev up your spiritual appetite so you desire more and more.
  • BE GOAL-ORIENTED: Giving yourself a reason to get in shape spiritually is a great way to stay on track!  Sign up for a Bible Study, Topic Study, etc. These usually provide great accountiblity
  • GO PUBLIC: Tell some people about your plans so they can encourage you and bring some accountability.  We don't like to let people down so sometimes this is a great motivator.

But I tell you

Really thinking through this today:

When Jesus taught, He claimed an authority that didn't come from the religious establishment of His day (Rabbi's, etc).  He asserted HIS OWN authority...think about how many times He said "but I tell you..."

(Matt 5:22,28,32,34,39,44) HE IS RISEN!

It's gonna be alright!

Let this mess with you today!

I DON'T CARE WHAT THE WORLD THROWS AT ME NOW-IT'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT!

(Need a verse for context Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.")

Peter asks a great question

(Photo I took of one of our students at her high school play "Crazy for you". Maddie's in the middle)

"Lord, how many times shall I forgive someone who sins against me? ...Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times."

This is an area that is easier said than done but what if we really understood the nature of this question and the parable that follows?  What if we got over the things that keep us tied down and learn to forgive, and forgive, and forgive, and forgive, and forgive........

What would change?

  1. families restored?
  2. friendship renew?
  3. hatred subside?
  4. justice revealed?
  5. become more like Christ?
  6. ?
I know some 'Christians who don't forgive'.  You know, people who boast their closeness with Christ and still can't forgive someone or themselves.  Sounds like an oxymoron to me like "abundant poverty". Let's be a forgiving people!

Persecution in India Videos...God open our eyes!

Saw these two videos on my boy Brad Coopers blog and HAD to repost them.   BE WARNED: Images in these videos are unedited. I need to repent for thinking working long hours is tough. I need to repent for being flippant in my Americanized thoughts of persecution. God open my eyes! How can we be blessed?

James 1:25 "But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does."

Want to know how to be blessed?
  1. Look intently into the perfect law (The Word of God)
  2. Don't forget you see/hear/read when looking at the perfect law
  3. Do what it says
Simple enough to understand, harder to practice.
