Must have leadership trait

Humility

Not the fake kind of humility where you downplay your strengths, pass along compliments that really only belong to you, and elevate the work of someone else when they didn’t put in near the work you did (we’ve all been there)…but true humility which is simply modest and respectful.

If you are blessed with success find the best way to not let it get to your head. Your teammates and followers will love you all the more when they know it’s genuine.

Stay humble.

A leaders biggest mistake

Overlooking talent that might exist on your team.

When you get comfortable around the people you work with it’s easy to overlook the ways they have grown and developed over time. Sometimes we can only see people for who they ‘used’ to be. If you are leading people, this is a massive mistake. Are you sure you don’t have a Steve Jobs, Micheal Jordan living among you right now?

Are you sure that “Sally” couldn’t do great things if you would give her something new to run with? Try your best not to box people up and put a lid on them (if the lid is to tight, great people WILL leave). Despite what you know about people, try not to keep people caged in with things like: previous accomplishments, whatever was on their resume, experience, race, non-objective perception, etc.

Sometimes the most brilliant people can miss great employees they have working right under their nose. Take a stab at frequently re-evaluating what your people are capable of. Open your eyes, get rid of your assumptions and get on building a great team.

Your perks aren't motivating your employees

After this phrase I was hooked and had to read the whole article. EXCELLENT POST for any one who is a leader, thinks their a leader, or wants to be a leader.

all your efforts to engage and inspire your employees will come to naught if you get your company culture wrong:

Often time leaders focus on function, role, your “job description”, but forget that there is legitmately something WAY more important to your productivity than those things…ALSO NOTE: “Company Culture” is far more than people putting their head down and acting like everything is great. Actually that might be a sign of terrible company culture. Any environment where people can’t be honest isn’t healthy.”

Go read the article and be inspired to think about HOW you’re actually leading. I know I did and this is an area I would consider myself strong in.

CONCENTRATE ON THE SOIL

Find what works for you

Find the system that works for your style.

One of the keys to longevity is finding fulfillment in what you do. We all long for that perfect job where we can be happy and show off our strengths but how many people settle far short of actually attaining it? Leaving themselves unhappy, unfulfilled, & unable to change their current situation.

Maybe this is your year to do something about that…”

For great success (regardless of your specific industry), you’ve got to do your best to understand what your strengths are and then ensure that you’re in a system that is a good fit for those strengths. Otherwise, people can easily overlook the talents you bring to the table.

Never be #bullied …

Loving the readings from my great mentors!

Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself – Harvey Fierstein.

#Innovation on the brain

Been thinking a lot about the nuances of #Innovation both professionally and personally.

Lots of people are crazy about innovation and I’m definitely one of those people.  Mainly because I care deeply about an industry that really doesn’t seem to get it.  We repackage, re-spin, re-tool, & re-work things others have already done to an excellent standard.  …is that innovation?

I don’t really know but it seems that the industry that should have the LOCK on innovation does very little actual innovation.  Not claiming that I’m super innovative either just saying that over the last year I’ve found that more and more interesting.  I really have no bones to pick in this convo but if this post makes you think “is he talking about me” well maybe I am…and maybe I’m not.  That’s for you to decide.

See, our minds are powerful beyond measure and they have a way of making us aware of the things we already know about ourselves but sometimes need a reminder of.  So maybe if you find yourself in a state of questioning, it’s time to go back to the drawing board rethink what you are and what you want to be.

I recently heard a guy named Henrik Werdelin - Managing Partner, Prehype talk about innovation like this,  ”Think about innovation as an Architect and build it into the structure of your organization.”   Which I  take as him saying, if you actually build INNOVATION…not copying…into your organization you will have actually get innovation. Oh what’s up “Apple” you get it. Have you seen their stock recently.  Brilliant!

Helps me re-evaluate the things I once saw as innovation and get a better grasp what true innovation is.

Innovation – The introduction of something new.  A new idea, method, or device.

Take advantage of the opportunities

In college I learned that there are many windows of opportunity in life. Sometimes the thing that separates us is that there are some that take advantage of these opportunities and some that don’t.

If we’re not careful we can easily squander great opportunities. You never know when the opportunities are going to arise in life. Often, they’re when you least expect them. But when they arise, you better make the most of them.

Make it a great day!
