Was just brainstorming how I keep myself grounded and it occurred to me that I self-assess ALL THE TIME!!!
I usually don’t beat up on myself but I’m pretty realistic about where I am. I more a Realist than I am an Idealist.
Here’s some stuff I try to keep in mind when I do this:
- Don’t get emotional – I’m definitely in touch with my emotional side but not in this process. I ‘keep it real‘ being too emotional can skew the results!
- Self-review consistently – ongoing assessment feels better to me than a once a year assessment. It’s easier to course correct along the way than if you’re 50 miles in the wrong direction.
- Remember all your wins/successes from previous years – keeping in mind you’re not THAT bad is helpful!
- Communicate with your supervisor where you need help – If an area is weak don’t be afraid to bring that witness to those leading you.
- Figure out your goals with detailed clarity – be specific about what you are trying to accomplish and what you were trying to accomplish.
- Don’t ‘spin’ the truth – Rationalization is great but not always in self-assessment.
- Be your own worse critic – Don’t beat yourself up but make sure you see everything about yourself others might see.
Very helpful. Challenging (particuarly #5), but helpful.
